The platelet-poor plasma 5-HT response to carbohydrate rich meal administration in adult autistic patients compared with normal controls.

چکیده
There are cumulative data indicating involvement of the 5-HT system in autistic disorder. Most studies examining 5-HT function have focused on whole blood 5-HT content. The carbohydrate-rich meal test (CRMT) is a dietary manipulation that could significantly influence platelet-poor plasma (PPP) 5-HT levels and reflect the responsiveness of the serotonergic system in 'free' plasma. In this study, CRMT was used as an indicator of 5-HT responsivity in drug-free adults with autistic disorder (n = 7), compared with normal controls (n = 10). The PPP 5-HT levels were measured at baseline and during 3 h after administration of the CRMT. A significant elevation in PPP 5-HT levels in adult autistic patients was reached 60 min after meal administration (p < 0.03 vs control and p = 0.05 vs baseline) and a significant decrease was noted after 120 min (p < 0.01 vs baseline). In contrast to the biphasic response of the autistic patients, normal controls exhibited a gradual linear increase of PPP 5-HT levels. Our results indicate that in adult autistic patients, the pattern of PPP 5-HT responsivity to a dietary challenge of CRMT is dysregulated compared with normal controls and provide further support for the role of 5-HT in autism.

The Role of Human Adult Peripheral and Umbilical Cord Blood Platelet-Rich Plasma on Proliferation and Migration of Human Skin Fibroblasts
BACKGROUND Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process following damage in tissue structures. Due to extensive skin damage caused by burn injuries, this study determined the role of human adult peripheral and umbilical cord blood platelet-rich plasma on proliferation and migration in human skin fibroblasts. METHODS Platelet-rich plasma (5, 10, 15, 20 and 50% PRP) from human umbilica...
متن کاملPostprandial plasma 5-hydroxytryptamine in diarrhoea predominant irritable bowel syndrome: a pilot study.
BACKGROUND Increased concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) can be detected in the systemic circulation after a meal and may be involved in the physiological control of gastrointestinal motility. Abnormalities of 5-HT release after a meal might explain some of the postprandial symptoms associated with the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). AIM To investigate the effect of a standard meal o...
متن کاملltered 5-Hydroxytryptamine Signaling in Patients With onstipation- and Diarrhea-Predominant Irritable Bowel yndrome
5 p P ackground & Aims: Evidence suggests that postpranial platelet-depleted plasma 5-hydroxytryptamine (5T) concentrations may be abnormal in irritable bowel yndrome (IBS). However, interpretation of the data has een hampered by the variable methodology and rather mall numbers used in previous studies. Therefore, the im of this study was to measure concentrations of latelet-depleted plasma 5-H...

Background: Healing involves complex processes that are not yet fully known. The wound healing process consists of three stages. In all these stages, normal wound healing requires platelet activation, release of cytokines and growth hormones, and chemotaxis and cell differentiation. Platelets play a key role in homeostasis and wound healing and growth factor production of more than 30 carried o...

Background: Hypothyroidism (HT), a relatively common condition among general population is associated with lipid profile abnormalities. The present study was designed to determine the contributive role of HT in the development of hypercholesterolemia (HCH). Methods: One hundred thirty six consecutive patients with HT and 272 euthyroid controls entered the study. Serum total cholesterol (CH) lev...
